Bast, the Cat Goddess of Kemet was and is still revered by followers and devotees from ancient times to the present day. Bast, also known as Bastet, is associated with fertility, pregnancy, childbirth, women, felines, and magic. Once known as a warrior Goddess, she remains a protective deity to people against illness and evil spirits. Several statues and hieroglyphs date back to and have survived from around 660 BC. An annual festival on October 31 is held in her honor.
A favored color of the Goddess is green, and it is used as a background for the quilt. Within the green background is a golden Ankh (symbol of life) adorned with gold and green glass beads.
Bast is depicted as a black cat with green eyes emphasized by glittering green beads. The center of her eyes was created with gold embroidery stitches. Her face has stitching that mimics the direction of fur, and the surface is accented by black cut glass beads in the center and black seed beads sewn along the outer quilted sections. Her whiskers are black silver-lined seed beads stitched on in several rows. She has a woman’s full lips that were appliqued and accented by silver-flecked fabric. Bast wears a gold headband adorned with gold and green glass beads on her forehead, and a green jewel sits over her third eye. Her hair is a mane of locks that cascade to her waist and is highlighted by silver flocked appliques. Her neck is quilted with gold bugle beads.
